After weeks of nice but cool weather or rain (which is striking in Death Valley, pleasant in a hot tub, pretty to drive through on the cloud line but rather too much like home after a while), Florida is very warm. Very very warm. Lounge around in the afternoon rather than walk around warm. I'd call this a basking place and there's only a few nutters out there sailing, parascending, skiing and generally making fun look like hard work. It's colourful and I wonder if Travis McGee would recognise the place; Miami has the dark and desparate feel of his world, with cops arresting someone at the side of the street and the redneck Cuban driver talking about cycle gangs trying to hijack him at night. It's an odd mix of holiday and hardline.
