What I want for Christmas...

A tool that networks all the social networking sites I get invited to join... a social network aggregator, just like Trillian for IM...

Define "social networking sites". Or give examples?

RealContacts
Hi5
Friendster
LinkedIn
Orkutt

just to mention the ones I think I've got accounts with or been invited to by friends. (warning Hi5 has a *lot* of ads and popups)

I hadn't ignored this - only just found the time to look into the sites. (And it's Orkut without the two "t"s. Try a Google for "Orkutt" and notice what's high in the results. ;-)

RealContacts and LinkedIn seem similar job-finding networks, with the rest being closed friends' networks. (Compared to LJ's open or closed approach depending on your whim.)

Do you know if they all provide a standard web-interface, or do some require specialized clients or use Java applets or similar? They don't look like the kind of sites that would be very friendly towards those writing third-party clients, unlike LJ (has been so far).

I've been interested in writing a REBOL LJ client, ("interested" in my case meaning I've thought about it but not even found the time to examine the current clients. Meaning don't hold your breath;), as once written it'd run on all these platforms...

with (hopefully) no modifications required. If attempted, it would make sense to try and make it a meta-client that'd allow plugins for other networks.

AltME Worlds (here: http://www.altme.com/ ) is built with REBOL but it's not friendly towards third-party clients either AFAIK.

so far they all work through the Web without any clients at all. Ideally I guess they'd plug into a local FOAF client ;-)

RE: Networking sites
Has anyone heard about www.whereareyounow.com? Very ingenious idea to visualise where your contacts / friends are in the world! So it's kinda of interesting since all these sites on this page are about making new friends...WAYN or WhereAreYouNow allows you to keep in touch with your existing contacts but also to make new ones. The thing I like the most about it is the graphical interface and the interactive world maps! Worth a try!
