I'm an IT Pro (it says here)

Simon and I are now also blogging on the IT Pro site at http://www.itpro.co.uk/blogs/editorial-blogs/simon-bisson-and-mary-branscombe/. I claim first post with a piece about Las Vegas and the Montecito - which is Intel's new Itanium as well as the home of Ed & Delinda DeLine, Danny, Mike, Mary, Nessa and the ever-amoral Sam. I don't know if Intel has a safe full of silver bars...

This has reminded me of something I was thinking about when I was cycling home: how do paper computer magazines make money these days?

PC Pro - used to be 1/2 ads, now it feels like less than 1/10. Computer Shopper 3/4 to about 1/10. Etc etc etc.

it's a very interesting question. Look at Forbes and Business Week - the problem isn't just tech titles
-some magazines sell slots on their cover disk
-advertorial and sponsored copy and supplements
-response rates from paper ads can be higher than online so the ad rates can be higher
-the paper magazine distributes the brand for the online site
-people do still buy magazines. few of us take a PC to the loo ;-)

I can confirm that the weekly rag Computing is not about the third of the width it was a few years back. Mind you, I only read it nowadays for the Backbytes column and Dilbert... :D

Oh, and I do occasionally use my laptop whilst on the loo, as I pointed out to a friend one time on IM... *lol*

I plead the 5th on where and when I use my technology ;-)

What, no RSS?
Seems to be a very odd omission for a blog these days... ;|

I see that Jon Honeyball and several other contributers to PC Pro are blogging there too. No surprise, seeing as it's a Dennis Pubs gig, but I'm wondering if Jon is having to write more to support all those servers of his... ;)

Re: What, no RSS?
we want you to visit the site ;-) See all the other wonderful content. You can get an RSS feed of the news; I don't actually know if there are plans to syndicate more of the content.

Servers? Honeybun has the car habit to support too...

Re: What, no RSS?
There is one - and I've made it a LJ feed as itproblogs...

Pretty style, but like most of the fancy CSS driven styles, sections pile into each other, text overlays other text; most untidy. Is it IE7's doing?

is that the IT Pro page or my new LJ style you're having problems with? if it's the IT Pro style I have a chance of getting the designers to fix it ;-)

The IT Pro pages are fine. It is the LJ cruft that's the problem.
